Greetings to All.
If there's anything that matches the chaos in my house the past 3 months, it's the chaos on my computer. I just today figured out that I never sent the final Projectoree Newsletter, so here t'is:
This is the final Projectoree 2003 Newsletter, and closes out this year's event.
1) Projectoree Accounting
Paid attendance was 314. Pre-event estimated attendance started at 395, and decreased to 375 via withdrawals and contractions. So we ended up about 60 attendees short - probably due to the dire weather forecast. Of course, as we all now know, we ended up with just about the best weather weekend of the entire Spring, and all the predicted nasty weather went just north of Pohick Bay. Something for everyone to consider when thinking of bailing out on future Scouting events - "you never know".
Total expenses for Projectoree 2003 were $5179.18 Total income was $5139, with one Unit being short about a hundred dollars on their payment. Because they got hammered on their attendance, we settled at $40.18, and so this year's Projectoree broke even exactly (by design, if you prefer).
The carryover Projectoree Surplus (maintained in the Troop 111 Treasury) after Projectoree 2002 was $1219.27; prior to this year's Projectoree, four additional Projectoree 2002 T-Shirts were sold at $5 each, raising the surplus to $1239.27 In addition, the Registrar at this year's Projectoree sold a good volume of still more Projectoree 2002 T-Shirts, and also some extra Projectoree 2003 patches, thereby raising an additional $43. Therefore, the current Projectoree surplus stands at $1282.27, again maintained in the Troop 111 Treasury.
As always, the Projectoree accounts are drafted by myself, then audited by the Troop 111 Accountant, then separately by the Troop 111 Treasurer. They are also available for anyone who so wishes to audit. If you are interested in doing so, please contact me.
2) Projectoree Patrol Standings
The Patrol Standings for all ten Projectorees (covering nine years 1995 - 2003 (we had two Projectorees in 1999)) are displayed at the following website:
Check it out!
3) Patrol Evaluations
21 of 25 Eval Forms were turned in. As previously detailed, in order to avoid some of the problems of the past few years on evaluations (e.g., see Newsletter #10 from Projectoree 2002), we asked the Patrol Leaders to fill them out *with their Patrols* at their campsites during lunch and/or dinner, and came around after dinner to collect them. However, some Patrols still used the traditional protocol, filling them out on the fly, and turning them in after the Scoutmaster Chariot Race. All 21 forms were included in the evaluations. In the following chart, 5 points was great, 4 was good, 3 was OK, 2 was poor, and 1 was terrible.
| Caber Toss | 4.3 |
| Cave Rescue | 3.9 |
| Egg Toss | 4.5 |
| Firebuilding Race | 2.9 |
| Hot Lava Rescue Relay | 3.8 |
| Log Raising Relay | 3.3 |
| Nuclear Reactor | 4.0 |
| Obstacle Course | 4.8 |
| Radioactive Basketballs | 3.8 |
| Running Kim's Game | 3.5 |
| Spider Web Escape | 3.3 |
| Walk the Plank | 4.1 |
Some Comments:
The low evaluation for the Firebuilding Race (usually one of the top scorers) was because it wasn't run according to the instructions (no tripod setups); this was noted on over half the forms. The Log Raising Relay had a split personality, apparently due to some early equipment failures (???); not sure what was meant by those comments, but several Patrols marked it low because of these "problems". The Spider Web Escape was another one where Patrols either liked it a lot or didn't like it very much at all - but there was little in the way of commentary on why.
Overall, the average evaluation (~3.8) was about the same as Projectoree 2002. Of note, there were fewer problems with Patrols upgrading their own Troop's events while hammering everyone else's. However, we still have the problem of Patrols downgrading events when they did poorly on it. I'm not sure how we can fix that, or if a fix is even possible. Your suggestions on that are (still) welcome.
4) Lost and Found
These were the items still remaining as of the closeout of the Projectoree. Naturally, none have any names, initials, Troop Numbers (why are we not surprised?) If anything sounds familiar....
I) Standard Nalgene Water Bottle. Smoky gray colored body, bright blue top. The top has a small "melted" spot on one side, like it touched a hot stove or something similar. Still holds water despite the spot.
II) Knit pullover cap, two tone, no brand-name. Top is bright blue, bottom is dark blue. About medium size, I guess.
III) Abercrombie "Basketball" Shirt, long sleeved. Large # 34 on the back. Front has Abercrombie with a printed aphorism "There's no winning in practice but without practice there's no winning BASKETBALL". Shirt has small tears both front and back. Size is Children's XL.
IV) Small (Children's 14-16) very light duty long-sleeve sweatshirt, with a large and stylized "EI" logo on the front, with "Emerald Isle, N.C." underneath. Brand is "Classic Heroes".
V) Plain gray, medium weight sweatshirt, Discus Athletic brand, Adult's small.
VI) Colombia brand light winter duty jacket, Men's Medium sized, zip-on hood attached. Body is bright blue, sleeves are primarily dark gray with a black stripe. Pit zips, mesh pockets with inside access. Fairly new condition. This looks to be a fairly pricey ("Casual Adventure type") item and I'd sure like to reunite it with its owner!
All items except the jacket were washed immediately after the Projectoree; the jacket doesn't look to be all that dirty and I didn't want to risk washing it.
5) Projectoree 2004
The 10th Annual Projectoree (a milestone for sure!) will be held the weekend of April 30th - May 2nd, 2004. Be there, aloha.
