1998 North Arlington Projectoree
Newsletter # 1 (9/19/97)

Solicitation of Interest

Greetings once again;

The 1998 Projectoree is scheduled for Friday - Sunday, April 24th - 26th, at Camp Wilson (Pohick Bay Regional Park.) The selected date is the second weekend after Easter, which falls on April 12th, 1998. The locale is contingent upon our ability to reserve the space with the NVRPA. As in 1997, the event is open only to Troops residing in North Arlington, and will be oriented around the by-now familiar Patrol games/competition format. [For Troops who have not attended a previous Projectoree, an additional informational brochure is enclosed.]

Enclosed is a self-addressed, stamped envelope and self-explanatory commitment form indicating your interest (or lack thereof) in participating in this event; I would appreciate your mailing it back to me by no later than Friday, October 10th. [This will hopefully give each Troop adequate time to discuss the event with their PLC's.] Please note that - in order to minimize xeroxing and postage expenses - all note that - in order to minimize xeroxing and postage expenses - all Troops returning a negative response will not receive any future mailings regarding Projectoree `98.

For your information and consideration, you are reminded that Patawomeck District is NOT holding a Spring Camporee in 1998, due to both the ongoing and (by then) imminent redistricting process and the proximity of the normal date (also April 24th - 26th) to the Scouting all the Mall show (May 9th). However, this certainly doesn't mean that we're the only game in town. For those units who are not interested in participating in either the Projectoree or the Scouting on the Mall show, but would still like to attend a Spring Camporee, the following information regarding camporees in other, nearby Districts is provided as a courtesy:

Prince William District April 24th - 26th David Sealy 703 331-0811

George Washington District April 17th - 19th Steve McEwan 703 764-2860

Locations and "themes" have not yet been determined for either of the above camporees, but should be available by November or December. For additional opportunities, you may also wish to check the Scouter's Digest for Spring Camporees being held in other NCAC Districts. Note that the "other" Northern Virginia District (Blue Ridge) is (like Patawomeck) not holding a Spring Camporee in 1998, and is instead strongly encouraging their units to participate in the Scouting on the Mall show [and, in a laughingly familiar scenario, a number of Blue Ridge District Troops who have no interest in attending the Show are therefore considering running their own "unsanctioned" Spring Camporee, much to the dismay of the local District Committee.]

Some additional comments on the Projectoree. As was instituted in 1996, all attending Troops will need to front an "earnest deposit" of $100 in early January; note that this deposit is fully credited towards your final registration fees. In addition, each Troop will be formally tasked with running at least one of the events, and with providing a miminum number of Senior Scout and Adult Staff members (commensurate with their Troop size, of course.) All attending Troops must provide personnel (both Adult and Scout) to attend the various planning meetings, starting with the first organizational meeting on Sunday, November 2nd, at St. Agnes' Parish Center, 7 - 9pm. [All future meetings will also be held on Sunday nights, and will start at 7pm.] An agenda for the first meeting (and directions to St. Agnes) will be mailed to all attending Troops by no later than Monday, October 27th. All mailings will be made to the two persons you have designated on your commitment form; eventually, pertinent mailings will also be made to the primary Adults/Senior Scouts in charge of each event. Finally, you may expect the cost of Projectoree `98 to be significantly reduced, with registration fees dropping from $8 to (probably) $6 per participant.

If you have questions, or wish to discuss any of these matters in further detail, please email me. I would also appreciate a call if you are no longer the Scoutmaster of your Troop (providing me with the name, address and phone number(s) for the new Scoutmaster.)

Yours in Scouting,

Dr. Bob
Scoutmaster, Troop 111
