Backpacking Meal Items

Breakfast Items:

Oatmeal
Cream of Wheat
Add-water only Pancakes, with Dehydrated syrup (Notes: extremely slow, syrup available at camping stores, expensive!)

Pop-Tarts (or equivalent)
Granola Bars, many variants on these - avoid "soft and chewy" type - they melt too easily
Nutra-Grain Bars (or equivalent)
Breakfast Bars (or equivalent)

Raisins or other dried or dehydrated fruits - many now available, both in bulk or pre-packaged
Small boxes of Cereal, assorted or one flavor
Low Fat Granola (Large Box) or other "hard" cereal (grape-nuts, Frosted Mini-Wheats, etc.)
Cereals may require dehydrated milk - cold water will do as well
"Pemmican Bars" - Available at Camping Outlets - expensive!
"Bacon Bars" - Available at Camping Outlets - expensive!

Tang, or equivalent
Fruit Juicies, Festivas (or equivalent)
Hot Chocolate
Hot Cider
Hot Tea (needs sugar)
Coffee (needs sugar and coffee creamer)

Lunch Items:

Crackers (or Cracker cookies, like Graham Crackers) - many different sizes and types!
Peanut Butter
Jelly
Squeeze-Cheese
Deviled Ham (or Equivalent)
Ham Spreadables (or equivalent; note that there are at least 4 types of Speadables)
Beef Jerky (or equivalent)
Slim Jims (or equivalent)
Preserved Pepperoni (or equivalent)

Gorp (or Equivalent - "Trail Mix", "Swiss Mix," etc.)
Nuts (Cashews, peanuts, etc. - bulk from bulk bins! - not individual packets!)
Cookies, Oatmeal Raisin, Fig Bars, or other dry fruit type cookies, many available
Pringles (or equivalent) Note that bagged potato chips or Doritoes are bulky and easily crushed!
Pretzel Sticks; again, avoid bagged, bulk pretzels - too bulky, easily crushed!

No-Melt Candy Bars
"Power-Bars" (or equivalent, several flavors available)
Fruit Rolls, Festivas, etc.
Dried Fruits - Raisins, Apples, Dates, Apricots, Bananas and Pineapples are best
Hard Candies (Buy in bulk only!) - Excellent for hiking snacks.

Drink Mixes - Lemondade, Ice Tea, etc., many variants available - avoid diet-type drink mixes!

Dinner Items:

Ramen Noodles, Cup-o-Noodles (or equivalent), many flavors available
Stove-Top Stuffing, 2 or 3 flavors available; addition of bacon bits or dehydrated meat makes into an even better meal item.
Lipton Rice Dinners - many flavors available - do not buy margarine or milk - not needed!
Lipton Pasta Dinners - many flavors available - do not buy margarine or milk - not needed!
Macaroni and Cheese - need small can of evaporated milk, or several extra packages of squeeze cheese, in order to make reasonable cheese mix
Spaghetti or "rotini"-type pastas (requires sauce); rotini are easier; dehydrated sauce is available at camping stores, but buying a small plastic jar at the grocery store is a lot less expensive.
Tuna casserole-type meals in a box (requires canned tuna or canned chicken)

Canned Meat - chicken or tuna fish best - better to get smaller cans with "pop-tops"
Preserved meats - beef jerky, dried sausage, pepperoni, etc.
Dried meats - diced beef, chicken, etc. - hard to find anymore!, often quite expensive
Dehydrated Meals from Camping Outlets - many available, very expensive!

Dehydrated vegetables from Camping Outlets - green beans and corn are best, several others are available. In general, not too expensive.
Cookies, Oatmeal Raisin or other "quality" cookies - dry and firm, with fruit are best
Instant pudding (add-water type, or you'll need to also bring powdered milk)

Dehydrated Desserts from Camping Outlets - many available, very expensive!
