Patrol meetings at Dave Natella's house. Dave's ant farm was a big attraction.
Peter White leading "Class-A" hand clap.
Mr. Abel leading everyone up switchbacks on the Appalachian trail, RUNNING under full gear, and (I need independent confirmation on this) performing handstands in camp afterwards. Mr. Abel liked to refer to his accommodations as The (name of campsite here) Hilton.
Curt Cramer telling "The Monkey's Paw" story around the campfire. Curt was the best story-teller I ever heard.
The look on Mr. Fike's face when Dennis MacDonald and I told him we'd finished our lashed-log bridge project at Goshen and named it after him. He looked kind of uncomfortable (anticipating future lawsuits, I guess).
Saturday mornings at Mrs. Cleverly's house in Flint Hill, VA getting the key to her farm (the "permanent campsite") on the Jordan River. Mrs. C. came out with us early on, driving her red Jeep and pointing out features, etc. (e.g., the best trail to take so our cars wouldn't bottom-out).
The whole Troop beating the path hugging the Jordan River, in search of the deepest, safest, swimming hole. Some of the older guys had to wade in and take "soundings" and search for submerged rocks. The water was NEVER warm.
Andy Bamford leading an inspiring rendition of "Alice's Restaurant and Massacre" from memory around a campfire on the Ides of March 1969.
The Troop initiation: You had to meet the Horsefly, TsetseFly, DragonFly, and LetterFly, before being told where the ashes from the first Flint Hill campfire were buried.
Going back to Goshen as a leader and discovering that NOT A THING had changed, except now they issued screwdrivers with the ancient .22 rifles on the shooting range, to remove jammed rounds (because not a thing had changed).
Steal the Bacon. Isaiah Is You There. O, Great Water Buffalo. May the Great Scoutmaster of All Scouts be With You Till We Meet Again.
