Eagle Scout
Nathan H. Berry
I was in Troop 111 for 4 years, and really enjoyed it. There were about 40-80 members in the Troop. Scoutmaster Claude Fike (whose son made Eagle with me in 1970) was very organized and dedicated. The Troop met once a month, and went on camping trips once a month. We met at Hannon Hall. Probably half of our camping trips were to private land in Flint Hill, VA; beautiful country, with a small river with fishing running thru it. The land was owned by Mrs. Cleaverly, who gave the Troop permission to use it. The Troop eventually lost use of it, because a bridge washed out and they couldn't get permission to cross someone else's land to the site.
One trip that sticks in my mind was camping in Quantico, VA in January, 1968. The wind was so strong our tent blew down several times, and for dinner we each had a cup of ground beef. The fire just wouldn't stay lit! Not exactly a gourmet meal! It was extremely cold, but we somehow survived. The "Tenderfoots" huddled in the Scoutmaster's car that night. The "real" scouts stuck it out!
Another favorite was southern Maryland (Calvert County). We would collect fossilized sharks teeth (of which I still have a few), and explore old houses.
After making Eagle in February 1970, I faded from Scouting. I still love the outdoors, and have made several camping trips recently to western Maryland for turkey hunting and fishing.
Sincerely,
Nathan Berry
