Troop 111 - Summer High Adventure Trip

Houseboating & Canoeing on the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada

A Canadian Huckleberry Finn Adventure

Friday August 7th - Saturday August 15th

This summer we've planned a Canadian Huckleberry Finn Adventure. We'll be exploring the Rideau Canal System by houseboat and canoes.

What is a the Rideau Canal? The Rideau Canal is a 125 mile historic waterway. Built by the British in the early 1800's as a defensive measure against American invasion, the canal extends from Ottawa to Kingston, Ontario. This 19th century engineering marvel is a series of 24 lockstations that winds its way through some of the most scenic countryside and waterways in southern Canada. From the heart of the Canadian Capital, through pastoral landscapes and the cottage country of Eastern Ontario, the canal meanders southeast through island-dotted lakes to the famous "limestone city" of Kingston. To help get your bearings, the Canal is located about one hour north of the U.S. 1000 Islands.

We've rented a 40 foot houseboat along with a number of canoes to use a our base of operations. The plan is to pick the houseboat up half way down the Rideau Canal System. We'll be heading south to Kingston and looping back. Camping on islands, fishing, canoeing, swimming, snorkeling, and sightseeing in the various small towns along the way is our current plan.

What I need currently is a general idea of how many Scouts would like to attend!!! A headcount is need for general planning and logistic purposes. It is estimated the cost the trip to be approximately $235(more info to follow as we determine the total number of campers). Plenty of time to get those Scouts earning their way with summer job proceeds! Please call or email Dan Creedon or Kim Smith and tell us whether or not your coming. More information will follow over the next several months. Thanks for your assistance in helping us plan this adventure.

ADULTS ARE WELCOME - DRIVERS WILL BE NEEDED.
