In Tribute - Roy Mimms

A Sad Day, Folks.

By now many of you have heard that Roy Mimms passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 28th, at Arlington Hospice. Cause of death not announced, but probably just general failure.

The Celebration of a Man...

Roy Mimms was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, February 6th, with full (and I mean really full) military honors, with pellet sleet falling. As you might guess, large contingents were present at the Service (about 200) and at Arlington (about 50). Representing the Troop at one or both were Tim Arthurs, Bill Brady, John Manning, Rich Sheehey and myself. Also present were numerous Patawomeck and North Arlington Scouters, including Troops 143, 149, 162, 167 and many, many others. Very impressive, and I think the family was really touched by this display of respect and affection for Roy. One comment of note; according to Dick Meyers, Roy had assisted over 200 Eagles in his career as Arlington or Patawomeck District Eagle Board Representative. That includes at least 15 of ours, by the way, over the last 20 years. Amazing.

This was my third service at Arlington, and the most impressive by far. Roy made his final journey by caisson, drawn by four horses and preceeded by an Honor Guard of at least 40 members of the 3rd Infantry, including a small band and trumpeter. After a few last comments by the Pastor of Mt. Olivet, a three-man rifle squad gave a three shot salute, taps was played, and the flag was ceremoniously folded and given to Eva Belle. A simple but moving ceremony, worthy of the man. A small reception was held in the Officer's Club afterwards, but I think only a few guests joined the family - everyone else had to return to work, including yours truly. Tim Arthurs put it best: "We lost a good man today."

The Troop 111 tribute fund to Roy has grown to $320, from nine Troop families or alumni. Thanks to one and all who made a contribution.

Please remember Roy in your prayers - he was a man who dedicated himself for decades to Arlington Scouting, and will be sorely missed by his friends and compatriots. Rest in peace.

-Bob
