SCOUTING FOR FOOD - SATURDAY, Nov. 14th!
American Flag Retirement Drive
Used Daypack Collection Drive
Greetings, Neighbors! Since 1988, the Boy Scouts of America have run an annual food collection drive for distribution to the needy in the Washington Area. Troop 111, sponsored by St. Agnes Church, is collecting in the Woodland, Dominion Heights, Waverly Hills, and Livingston Heights areas this year. You will hopefully remember us from past food drives in your neighborhoods.
Although the Country has enjoyed unprecedented prosperity these past two years, there are still many who will go hungry this winter. "Scouting for Food" is the largest food collection drive in the Washington area by far (involving tens of thousands of Scouts), and your contributions are vital for the success of numerous Churches, Soup Kitchens and other helping organizations. Last year, Scouts in the Washington area collected over 2.5 million pounds of food (of which about 3,000 pounds was collected by Troop and Cub Pack 111). This food goes directly to helping organizations in this area - via the Washington and Northern Virginia Area Food Banks. This drive dwarfs all other food drives combined!
This is how it works - first, we ask that you collect any canned goods that you're willing to donate, and place them in the provided bag. We will be happy to take anything useful. Second, please place the bags back outside late this upcoming Friday night or (preferably) early Saturday morning (by about 8:30am); we'll be coming back around early Saturday to collect the bags and relay them to the collection center. Our Scouts will be in pairs, in Uniform, and will be accompanied by Parents in automobiles. We will not be knocking on your door to solicit contributions.
We will have a few "reminder" signs posted around both neighborhoods later this week, starting Wednesday night (weather permitting). We start collecting at 9:00am Saturday morning, and are usually finished by 11:00am. If we somehow miss each other, the collection point is at Westover Baptist Church (corner of N. Washington Boulevard and N. Patrick Henry Drive, next to Swanson Middle School, about a 5 minute drive) `til about 2:00pm Saturday afternoon; please stop by!
American Flag Retirement Drive
Troop 111 is again offering to "retire" your worn-out American Flags as an additional service to the community. This will be done with due respect by Uniformed Scouts at one of our upcoming campouts, the North Arlington Projectoree. If you have any old, worn-out flags that you wish to have properly retired, please put them in a separate plastic bag and place them alongside the Scouting for Food bag. [Please do not put them in the same bag as the food - we might miss them!] We will also take State, County or Foreign/National Flags.
Used Daypack Collection Drive
Finally, the Troop is also collecting used daypacks for contribution to needy school children in Arlington County. [You may remember several articles on this issue in some of our local newspapers last year.] The "bookbags" of the 1960's are out - most children now use daypacks to carry their books, homework, lunches and other educational materials to school. However, the average new daypack is ridiculously expensive, and many families cannot afford to buy them for their children. If you have used daypacks gathering dust in your closets, please consider donating them to this worthy cause. All collected daypacks (which are in acceptable condition) will be donated to schools in Arlington County for distribution to needy children. If you have any used daypacks to donate, please place them in the same bag as the worn-out American flags. [Again, please do not place them in the same bag as the food - we might miss them!]
