Alonzo Stagg "50/20" Hike
March 9th, 2002

Troop 111 has opened its annual Alonzo Stagg Hike (50 miles in 20 hours) to all Chain Bridge Units. The hike will be Saturday, March 9th (rain date Saturday, March 16th). [Note, however, that the *regional* science fair date was recently switched to March 9th, so keep that in mind when considering your level of participation.]

Can your Senior Scouts walk 50 miles in one day? If they can, they will earn the coveted Alonzo Stagg medal! This is a good training event for Philmont-bound crews, and also for Scouts who want to walk a shorter distance (i.e., 10, 20, or 25 miles) to knock off a Hiking Merit Badge hike.

Hikers will be driven from St. Agnes' Parish Center (at 5:30am) to the starting point (Seneca Creek on the C&O Canal). The hike proceeds from Seneca Creek to Key Bridge in Georgetown, then uses various trails in Arlington to offer 25-mile and 50-mile routes. A moveable feast, First Aid support, and "sag wagons" will provided at multiple rest/refuel support stations along the route. The cost is $15 per hiker, which covers food and drinks, first aid, support vehicle gas, patches, Alonzo Stagg medals, and other miscellaneous expenses. Troops wishing to participate should also provide at least two adults to assist the sag wagon/support team. An informational flyer, a sign-up roster, and a waiver form (required for all participants) will all be provided to all interested Units upon request. In order to ensure BSA Insurance coverage, all Scout participants must be registered (and adult participants are strongly encouraged to also get registered). The deadline for signups (and payments) is Monday, February 25; that is a hard date. Note that signups are limited to the first 125 participants. Contact Ted G. for more information.
