Alonzo Stagg "50/20" Hike
March 13th, 2004

For the third straight year, Troop 111 has opened its annual Alonzo Stagg Hike (50 miles in 20 hours) to all Chain Bridge Units. The hike will be Saturday, March 13th (rain date Saturday, March 20th).

Can your Senior Scouts walk 50 miles in one day? If they can, they will earn the coveted Alonzo Stagg medal! This is a good training event for Philmont-bound crews, and also for Scouts who want to walk a shorter distance (i.e., 10, 20, or 25 miles) to knock off a Hiking Merit Badge hike.

The 2004 route will start at Mt. Vernon, follow the Mt. Vernon trail (with food stops along the way) to Key Bridge and then on to St. Agnes. The 50-mile route will continue back to Key Bridge, down the Mt. Vernon Trail to National Airport (food stop), then up the Four Mile Run Trail to the W&OD trail, finishing with 5 loops of the W&OD/Custis/Bluemont Junction trails (passing last food stop 5 times). Hikers can walk a shorter route (i.e., 10 or 20 miles) and will be returned to St. Agnes from stops. $15 cost per hiker is for abundant food, snacks, drinks, photos, sag wagon, and transportation. Patches for all participants; special patches for 25- and 50-mile finishers. Coveted Alonzo Stagg medal for 50-mile finishers! An informational flyer, a sign-up roster, and a waiver form (required for all participants) will all be provided to all interested Units upon request. In order to ensure BSA Insurance coverage, all Scout participants must be registered (and adult participants are strongly encouraged to also get registered). The deadline for signups (and payments) is Monday, February 23; that is a hard date. Note that signups are limited to the first 125 participants.
